Monetize Your Web Video

Adam Root - Thursday, April 23, 2009

Web video is big, really big. Each month more people visit YouTube than watch the Super Bowl. Every minute YouTuber's upload 12 hours of footage. If YouTube was Hollywood there would be 60,000 feature films released every week. However for YouTuber's, the one number that isn't so big is the one with a dollar sign next to it. So just how do you make money with your video assets? The answer may be surprising.

One advantage content creators have are followers. Dedicated followers. Followers that are not changing the channel every 30 seconds or cooking dinner or fast forwarding through commercials on their DVR. It's those kind of things that television can't avoid that makes web video so enticing to brands- which is why product placement may be an affordable alternative for businesses and profitable arrangement for content authors.

Reality Mining- Focus Groups on Steroids

Adam Root - Wednesday, April 22, 2009

According to MIT's Human Dynamics Group, communication is more than updating your status across social networks. To find how, why, and more importantly how to improve communication within groups a new field of study has emerged called Reality Mining.

Reality Mining studies how we interact by tracking people through location aware devices. Currently it is being used in corporate communication, and academia purposes.

For advertisers the data captured of the masses using location aware devices could spawn a revolution. Although not everyone is excited. Many people are not fond of the idea of brands knowing the time, location, and duration of their daily activities. In the meantime we will have to settle with opted-in participants.

Reputation Management 101

Adam Root - Friday, April 17, 2009

It took 42 years for Domino's to build it’s reputation and 2:26 for two employees Michael Setzer and Kristy Hammonds, to destroy it on YouTube.

The YouTube video featured Setzer, and Hammonds from an individually owned Domino's franchise in Conover, N.C tampering with food. Domino's created an official YouTube account with a formal apology 2 days later. A little to late. The videos have already been viewed, downloaded and re-posted thousands of times. Patrick Doyle, President, Domino's U.S.A said himself "It is not a surprise that this video has caused a lot of damage to our brand"

Here are a few tips and tools to control your reputation online:

  1. Have a presence in social media- This is a no brainer, but I am always surprised how many brands are not engaged in social media.
  2. Allow your customers to engage you: A great tool out there for allowing 2 way communication between your brand and the customers who consume it is Get Satisfaction So far, they have helped: 14,748 companies, 15,299 employees 11 million customers work together to improve 21,733 products and services.
  3. Monitor communities- StartPR and Addict-O-Matic helps you find, manage and respond to mentions of your company, your brand, your products, your service and your people online.
